Dr Arron Rimmer recently gave a presentation at the West Midlands ICME Branch. The title of the presentation was “Isothermed Ductile Iron (IDI): Assessment of the Proposal for the Inclusion into the European Standard”.
IDI was a patented material from Italy but, after working with other member of the European Standards Committee, the material is under review for addition the EN1563.
Dr Rimmer presented details on the material and the advantages that IDI has over other certain grades of standard iron including pearlitic-ferritic 500-7 and solution strengthened high Si ferritic 600-10. The properties proposed are 800 MPa tensile, 480 MPa yield and 6 % elongation, with the material based on a low Mn unalloyed spheroidal graphite iron, with a requirement of a salt quench heat treatment. This material will offer foundries and OEMs an alternative to existing 500-7 and 600-10 with enhanced performance .
